Almshouses for An Active Third Age
This Almhouses provide 33 dwellings including guest accommodations and three design options: One bedroom
(50 sqm), Two bedrooms (74 sqm), and Three bedrooms (86 sqm). The design aims to integrate elderly with the wider society by providing an active commercial ground floor and communal spaces such as community hub, gym, double height exhibition space, reading space, shared terraces and landscape.
The communal landscape design, which located on the ground floor acts as the urban courtyard that helps to improve our physical and psychological health, strengthen our sense of communities, and make Winchester city and neighbourhoods more attractive places to live and work. The green roof and vertical green wall help to reduce heat loss during winter months and generally improve the air quality.

Year: 2015-2016
Dwelling layout type 1 (50 sqm): 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 living room, 1 kitchen and private balcony.
Dwelling layout type 2 (74 sqm): 2 bedrooms, 1 walk-in closet, 1 bathroom, 1 living room, 1 kitchen and 2 private balconies.
Dwelling layout type 1 (86 sqm): 3 bedroom, 1 walk-in closet, 1 bathroom, 1 living room, 1 kitchen and 2 private balconies.
Acting commercial retails and exhibition space on the ground floor. Communal spaces and shared terrace on the first floor and almshouses on the floor above.
Building Orientation: workshop located at N receiving N light, whereas residential facing E/S/W. Green Roof / Wall: helps to reduce heat lost during winter and improve the air quality. Water Feature: reflect light, free cooling during summer time and use as water collection. Solar Shadings: protection from overheated. Solar Panels: collect and generate electricity and heat. Double Aspect: increase level of daylight in the building and ventilation.
Zoning urban fabric using the transition between public to private, providing a new Winchester’s gate way that reflects the city’s characteristics with the living wall, green roof and water features. The purpose of the buildings orientation is to act as a gateway to the city of Winchester.
