Economic Stimulus
This urban strategy examines the programme that the administration is proposing and considers a more ambitious architectural intervention. The drastic changes within two decades have affected the residential neighbourhoods. The project approaches two problems: protect and promote/generating cultures and economy, also re-stitching each different time strips of land. These fragile and disconnected strips of land have its presence and yet disconnected Iao Hon from the rest of the community.
Iao Hon was once a hub within the community and since the gaming industry was introduced 33% of its residents now work in casinos. However, Iao Hon is no longer the centre for the community and in the next few decades, more and more people will move out to neighbouring cities (like Zhuhai) to find an affordable lifestyle as Macao is set to become the highest GDP per capita city in the world. This proposal explores in depth the changing relationship between Iao Hon, original Macao and its extended lands.
Methods
Due to the vast expansion of Macao at a fast rate, the overall language of the city does not connect. This is through the built form and through the urban fabric. The proposed changes to Iao Hon consist of interest points, urban pockets and routes were used to create a linkage between the disconnected urban fabric from East to West. Vertical connections were made between the landforms to reinforce the stitching of Macao together.
